Sprint is jumping on the pre-paid mobile service bandwagon. Walmart started selling the new "Common Cents Mobile" service at about 700 of its US stores on May 15. The big U.S. wireless carriers—risking profits for growth— are moving more aggressively into the low end of the cellphone market: Selling services to consumers without requiring them to sign contracts. Sprint Nextel Corp. is rolling out new brands and plans, including a partnership with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced Thursday that will charge seven cents per minute or text message—about half as much as TracFone Wireless, the largest U.S. prepaid provider. Telstra is the first Aussie carrier to reveal details of its 3G – or should we say, Next G – plans for the Apple's iPad, which launches here on May 28th.

Sprint Nextel Corp. is pushing even further into low-cost, prepaid cellphone service as the U.S.'s third-largest wireless carrier by subscribers fights to hang on to traditional contract customers.
